The three dimensions

Energy depletion, emotional distance or cynicism, and a reduced sense of effectiveness. They can appear separately. Someone who still feels effective but has turned cynical is at a different stage from someone who still cares but has run out of fuel, and the response differs too.

Why holidays often do not help

Because a break restores energy without changing the workload, role clarity, or recognition that caused it. That is why many people feel fine for a week and then crash on day three after returning.

The line to watch

If persistent physical symptoms appear, or thoughts that life is meaningless, this is no longer the territory of productivity tips. Speak to a professional.

FAQ

Is burnout the same as depression?
Not the same, although symptoms overlap. Burnout is work-related; depression affects every area of life. If unsure, get it checked.
